Constraints Create Smarter Design Decisions

Dasha Cameron
There’s a common myth that great design comes from total freedom. In practice, it’s often the opposite. Some of the most refined work I’ve done came from strict constraints — like a project limited to three brand colors, outdated typography, and accessibility rules stricter than WCAG 2.1.
At first, it felt restrictive. But those limits created structure. They forced consistency, clearer hierarchy, and reusable patterns that improved usability. The result was a clean, accessible, and distinctive product delivered ahead of schedule.
Constraints don’t block creativity — they direct it. They simplify decisions, align teams, and often lead to more intentional outcomes than unlimited freedom ever could.
